As for me,

my dad was a Ngen'giwumirri man, and my mum was a Ngan'gikurunggurr woman.

My mum's country lies back there - NgambuNgambu.

And dad's country is Lafuganying.

I didn't really

follow my mum's country, I went in the direction of dad's country -

the Ngen'giwumirri side.

My country is called Lafuganying,

and it's upstream from here.

We've got an easterly dry season wind blowing now,

maybe we'll take these kids of ours

and we might even get all the way up to Lafuganying.

We'll take the kids up

and let the country revive them.

They can hunt for fish,

that country is full of short-necked turtles

and bream and long-necked turtles and barramundi.

And us mob …

well I followed my dad in speaking

Ngen'giwumirri.

But even though I'm living here at Nauiyu,

I have contact with lots of other people,

so, my mum's language,

I get to speak that too - Ngan'gikurunggurr.

I don't forget,

whenever I go to Lafu,

with my sister and all the family

and our kids,

the two of us always call out first,

to the spirits,

to those old people who've passed away now but used to walk around on Lafuganying country.

The two of us call out, and we say to them

'We've come here, we've brought these kids

so the country can revive them', we tell them.

Once we're all feeling revived, we come back to Daly River.

We take the kids around fishing,

so they can get long and short necked turtles,

and barramundi …

the men go out for them.

I've got two aunties, who are the mums of my cousins,

Manyarra

and Baliny …

it's their country too.

I lost both of them …

oops, I mean I’ve actually lost all three of my cousins,

so there's just two still left.

One's living here,

and the other is in Palmerston,

he's currently drinking heavily, and not doing well.

Even though there's some of us working up there at the moment managing country, together with some whitefellas.

Once they've finished,

then we can go back,

and that country will be 'warmed up' and accepting of us,

together with my sisters, we'll gather the whole lot of kids up.

When the grass is burning, we can see the fires clearing Lafuganying up, it makes us feeling longing for our country

That makes me sad.

It reminds me that my dad and my mum wandered this country,

it reminds me,

and my aunts,

and the spirits wandering around

of Manyarra and Baliny.

As for dad, my dad's blackfella name was Arruwu.

I never did meet my dad,

but apparently he died somewhere around here before I can remember.

I only knew my mum.

My grandfather

and my two uncles lived

at Five Mile.

My three cousins were there too.

Sometimes I feel sad and start crying.

I'm telling this story to this guy here,

who’s recording me in Ngen'giwumirri.

I'm going to keep talking to these kids in Ngen'giwumirri, some of them will understand, some of them wont.

Earlier I said we went to Lafuganying,

and we came back from Wunganiwurr. Wunganiwurr

is our Dingo totem,

and its dreaming site is there. And Boil …

that dreaming is there too.

Once it's all dried out, we'll move back out there and live on that country.
